                                          Physical Condition and Training
The 8-mile race should only be attempted if you have been running or walking regularly for a reasonable period of time and are certain that you can complete the course.  Runners, if you have never competed in a trail race, please be aware that trail racing is much different than road racing.  The race course is rugged and you will encounter boulders, rocks, tree roots, gravel, and other hazards on the trail.  Beginning trail runners, please consider completing the course at least several times before the race.

                                          Caution!
There are two areas on the 8-mile race course that require extra caution.  Early in the race, you will enter a canyon leading to a bridge across a stream.  Right before the bridge, there is a boulder with a significant drop-off in the path.  You will need to break stride to negotiate this area.  Please be patient with other racers--you will be on your way again in no time.

Right after you cross this bridge, you will climb up to a narrow, rocky single-track path with a steep drop-off.  Again, please exercise patience--very quickly you will arrive at a wide, double-track portion of the course where you can safely pass other racers.

                                          Portable Music
Portable music (iPod, other MP3 player, radio, etc.) will not be allowed on the race course because much of the race course is singe-track.  Unfortunately, you would not be able to hear racers coming up from behind you.

                                          Babies
Babies and toddlers, along with their care-givers, are very welcome at race headquarters.  The race course is unfortunately too rugged for baby strollers, joggers, or carriers, thus these will not be allowed.

                                          Dogs
Dogs are welcome and allowed at Curt Gowdy, but must be leashed.  Unfortunately, dogs will not be allowed on the race course.  Because much of the race course is single track, they are too much of a trip hazard.
